Lately
A collection of things bringing me joy lately
I’m writing this in the middle of spring break, and honestly, I think this may be one of the only spring breaks we’ve ever spent entirely at home.
Part of the reason is this new season of life we’re in with high school sports. Our oldest, Piper, is on the varsity track team, and practices and invitationals continue throughout the break, so staying home was more or less decided for us. We do have family coming into town later in the week, which will be so nice, and I’m looking forward to having everyone together.
Still, it’s definitely a different kind of spring break, and I imagine a glimpse into what many of our future breaks may look like. Of course, I know one day we’ll miss these days desperately when the girls are off on their own, so for now I’m just trying to savor them.
I thought I’d share a few things that have been bringing me joy at home lately.
First is this little device Michael (the hubs) brought home the other day. It’s called the Schumann V2 Pro. It’s a customizable frequency device that can be used for things like sleep, focus, creativity and relaxation. I have been keeping it next to my bed at night and near my desk during the day, and while it’s still new to me, I’ve really been enjoying it so far
That book I told you about the other day, The Theo of Golden, well, I finished it, and I loved it. So much. Highly, highly recommend.
Right now I’m reading The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern and listening to My Friends on Audible. I almost always have this little pattern going: something on the Kindle app at night to fall asleep to, and something on Audible during the day while I’m doing dishes, cooking, or driving to pick up the kids.
I usually choose two very different kinds of books. My Kindle book tends to be lighter and easier to digest since I’m reading it before bed and don’t want anything too heavy. But my Audible pick is fair game. I just started My Friends, and it’s reminding me a bit of The Goldfinch. Has anyone else read both and thought the same thing?
We also recently discovered a tiny coffee shop we can actually walk to from our house, which feels like such a gift because we really can’t walk to much from where we live. We went last weekend with the dog and the kids, and not only is the place adorable, but the coffee is divine. I would love to make it a weekly ritual with the family. I know not every weekend will allow for that kind of leisurely outing, hello, sports family, but when it does, I’m really looking forward to it.
The other night I tried my hand at making the In-N-Out Flying Dutchman burger at home, which is basically a big slab of grilled onion on either side rather than a bun. The result was delicious, but they were almost impossible to eat without a knife and fork. So I’m not totally sure I’ll repeat the process, but I do have to say... they were very, very good. I basically used this recipe.
In my workout world, I’ve been going back to some of the earlier Tracy Anderson, MyMode Primal classes per my coach’s prescription, and I’m kind of loving it. Some of the classes feel familiar, but I know there is no way I was performing them even remotely correctly three years ago when I was just dipping my toes into the MyMode world.
So it’s actually really satisfying to revisit them now. Not that I’ve mastered them by any means, very much not the case, but I can feel how differently I move through them now. That’s one of the reasons I love my virtual private classes so much. I get micro-corrections on so many of the moves, and I can feel the difference immediately. So cool.
Okay, that’s all for now.
Happy Passover and Happy Easter to everyone.
